Microsoft Courier Dual-screen Tablet – New Details

The prototype of the Microsoft Courier dual-screen tablet has less and less secrets due to some leaks of internal documentation. Its interface is very simple, even if believed as being complex, and supports two-finger multitouch gestures, such as tap-and-hold for photo or object clipping, moving objects to the opposite page with a two-finger swipe to the left or to the right. Another way of controlling the display is by means of a stylus. The pen has two buttons and an eraser to switch between drawing styles or to undo most recent changes. The folding device could ship with dual 7-inch display, a built-in camera on the back and Wi-Fi.

Some interesting concepts are making the interface friendlier. The Infinite Journal compiles all the notes, clips and other data in the Courier tablet. The Smart Agenda provides messages, calendar overview or weather related information. A Cover Flow-like 3D page provided with a timeline allows users to navigate more quickly. The separate Library section would have to handle both media and applications in a central location and leads to the idea that e-book reading should have an important role.

The Microsoft Courier being a prototype, significant changes could occur before launching. It is considered a test platform for future touch interfaces conceived by Microsoft and could also be a replica to the Apple’s tablet.

  1. I think the Courier will be great for e-books, but not that great for multimedia because of the dual screen. Think the iSlate will be the best all around multimedia device.
