Creative surprised everybody by announcing an e-book reader, but did not provide any details about when it will be available and at what price it will be sold. Whether shipment to North America will be available or not is another unclear topic for the moment.
The temporary name of the new device is MediaBook, but this could change while in production and it will be based on Creative’s Zii processor. Equipped with a touchscreen and an SD memory card reader, the device will have text-to speech features and will be capable to browse the Internet, which makes it different of other e-book readers currently sold on the market. The MediaBook from Creative will also be able to play video and photo content, not only text and will have a full colour display. Other online services are not clearly specified yet.
About ten local and international publishers are in negotiations with Creative for content delivery to feed the new e-book. Singapore Press Holdings, the largest publisher in the area, is expected to candidate as a local provider of video and radio programmes, images, newspaper articles and more. Other publishers could offer educational materials, newspapers, magazines, textbooks, fiction stories and other materials.
