The October launch of Windows 7 did not induce a growth of the market share by itself. According to information from Net Applications, the nine days Windows 7 was on sale last month marked a drop of the share of Internet traffic to 92.52 percent, while its competitor Mac OS X reached a rise of 5.27 percent. Windows 7’s growth, reaching 2.15 percent, was practically annihilated by more than 1 percent of loss due to users who abandoned Windows XP, opting for other platforms, Mac being the preferred option.
Whether this trend will continue or not, this has to be seen, but Microsoft officials did not expect too much on short term. A bigger rise is likely to happen when Windows 7 will be bought as a pre-installed operating system on new PCs. Upgrading to Windows 7 from XP or Vista is supposed to bring only a small benefit as for number of users, because many customers will avoid to make this move, taking into consideration the necessity of performing a system clean when upgrading from XP to Windows 7. This could be a weakness that Apple would exploit and it already has done it, by saying that because starting from scratch is imperative the users could also switch to Mac as well.
Another concern for Microsoft is the Windows developer that has reached another low level, in fact the lowest, Internet Explorer reaching 64.64 percent for the first time. This happened while other competitors climbed, such as Firefox, to 24.07 percent, Chrome, to 3.58 percent or Safari, to 4.42 percent, all of them seeming to have taken advantage on Microsoft’s loss.
