The Needle Slim LED-backlit HDTV has been recently presented by Samsung. It is only 3.9mm thick (a bit over a tenth of an inch) and offers a 40-inch screen size with a 1,080 pixel resolution and a 120Hz panel. The contrast ratio is a 5,000:1 static ratio. This thin television was created by Samsung by placing two attached mirrors about 2 mm thick each for the screen before installing the LCD backlit unit. Previous Samsung LED-backlit HDTV’s were not under 1.2 inches thick.
Other details, including pricing and shipping dates, are not yet known. The Needle Slim HDTV will certainly be released in Japan very soon but no information is available for international releases.
