How Much Would Windows Users Pay for Apple Tablet?

Apple could launch an approximately 10-inch tablet in early 2010, but the price seems to be high enough due to the inclusion of 3G.

Apple’s tablet would have to be much below the rumoured $800 price in order to attract Windows users, according to a recent study belonging to the consumer electronics shopping site Retrevo.com.

68 percent of Mac users are supposed to accept a price over $600 while only 36 percent of Windows users would agree such a price. At $800, the difference is wider: 41 percent of Mac users would pay $800 while only 20 percent of Windows users would do the same. But 64 percent of PC users would gladly pay a price under $600. This makes the $600 price a critical cost for Apple to catch a significant section of the market.

The study reflects a reality, i.e. Windows users are more used than Mac fans to low-cost systems. A typical price for a Windows notebook is much lower than the average $1,500 a Mac user has to pay for a MacBook. The difference is even more visible if we refer to netbooks which are often under $400.

An alternative for Apple would be to sell this tablet as a netbook. Between 35 and 39 percent of all Mac and Windows customers already own a netbook or are planning to buy one this year, and more than 59 percent of iPhone owners are saying to do the same thing. However, it’s not clear enough if those users have at least heard that Apple intends to launch a notebook or a device similar to it, like the tablet is meant to be.

The Retrevo study does not reveal how many dissatisfied netbook users would switch to an Apple tablet or similar device, but that question could be asked soon.
