The iPhone seems to be at war with the whole world. The menace of Motorola Droid doesn’t seem to frighten Apple. On the contrary, a new war scene is erupting – that of the handheld gaming. Nintendo and Sony are the targets to beat and Apple is thinking to end this war in its favour in no more than five years. A DFC Intelligence report reveals that Japanese companies will still be in lead in the future in what concerns the number of units sold, but the ascension of devices like DSi or PSP Go is inevitable. By 2014, the iPhone and iPod are the only expected to see a major growth.

The reason of this significant growth is the wider range of functions the iPhone allows, compared to devices belonging to Sony and Nintendo, which are bought mainly for gaming purposes and Internet or media as a second feature. Buyers of iPod, not to mention iPhone, on the contrary, are opting for these devices primarily for their Internet access and media playback capabilities and only secondarily for gaming purposes. The DFC Intelligence report presumes that game downloads will rise up to 23 percent of all iPhone applications downloads in the future, becoming the second important category of applications for this device.
