Verizon’s campaign against Apple and AT&T has reached its peak. Parts of the Verizon’s strategy are already unveiled, but others still remain hidden and can only be supposed or will even be surprising everybody, rivals and customers as well.
Some rumors say that HTC Desire could be part of an entire series of Android-based handsets, considered as such by Verizon. This series would have to carry the name “Droid” as a brand. HTC Desire, a touch-only phone, with a 5-megapixel camera and a trackball, according to these rumors, would be named Droid Eris. Eris was the ancient Greek goddess of discord and maybe that’s the reason why Droid Eris will get an all-black color look.
Other rumors seem to reveal some changes in Verizon’s strategy. The Motorola phone would just be named “Droid” and the October 28th presentation would only concentrate on this device. HTC Desire would be launched in a lower-profile form later than the Droid, in the first days of November.
Verizon is supposed to try to attract all top Android devices from T-Mobile and become this way the most feared rival of Apple and AT&T in the same time. It also would be the main promoter of open mobile development. Verizon has lately changed its attitude towards phone software and promised not to try to impose in a dictatorial way the characteristics of Android phones software.
I just wonder if Apple/AT&T are actually going to be hurt by any of this. I mean, to me it seems other windows mobile phones will be hurt the most. So, it’s really Microsoft who stand to loose the most. I don’t know anyone who wants an iPhone who might even be slightly on the fence between it and an Android device. The only reason I’m at all interested in a Droid phone is that I’m already on Verizon. Which brings up something else. Even if someone is impressed by the Droid offerings, unless you are on VZW or your contract is up, it’s not like they are going to be stealing customers.
I have an iPhone, and I will be switching to the HTC Desire as soon as it comes out. The iPhone is an amazing phone, and has many extraordinary apps, but it’s also a closed platform, and can’t run whatever I want it to. … And the fact ATT sucks in my area really pushes me to another phone.
One type of phone, caused a company that had an attitude of keeping it’s phones so locked that even the simplest of programs would not work unless you paid for the programs service provided by Verizon.
One type of phone, that has over 10,000 programs ready to use, and thousands of programs that won’t cost a dime.
One type of phone, that cause Verizon to completely change it’s views on locking down phones in order to drive sales to the services that Verizon provides at a cost.
One type of phone, that will be the last phone you need.
The droid is comming and not to sound like an add for the damn devices. But I’ve seen what they can do. Windows, Apple, and Rim are going to be faced with a choice when the droid is finally available. Follow in the path of the droid, or just watch profit plumit. Everyone said that Verizon needs to get the iPhone…well the just did better, so long to every other network come November 6th-30th.
