The International Telecommunication Unit (ITU), a United Nations division, has recently approved the usage of a new Universal Charging Solution (UCS). ITU sustains that the energy charger will be compatible with all types of cell phones, no matter the make or model and it also says that some cell phone manufacturers already use this as a standard solution for their phones. The new charger helps at energy savings and, the most important, eliminates waste as users don’t have to buy a new one, even if they want to change their phone.
Even if the technical specifications of the new device are yet to be known, well-known manufacturers, such as Nokia and Sony Ericsson, are already known as partners to this project. The UCS is most likely to come out with European cell phones somewhere in 2010.
It is still unknown whether this European charger is similar or identical to the one manufactured by the GSM Association or not, but Nokia and Sony Ericsson are already implementing this solution. This standard charger will connect through a micro USB port and is due to be used starting 2012. Among the partners, there are phone manufacturers, like LG, Motorola and Samsung and carriers like AT&T, KTF, Telefonica, T-Mobile and Vodafone.
