Only 14.1 Million Phones Shipped by Sony Ericsson This Summer

Unsatisfactory results were obtained by Sony Ericsson during summer, even if there was a raise compared to spring. The Swedish firm only shipped 14.1 million phones during the three-month summer quarter compared to 13.8 million sales in the previous three months of the year. The figures are poor, however, if put next to last year’s similar period of time, meaning a 45.1 percent drop. Company’s revenue was one of the lowest in its history, dropping to $2.4 billion, far away from almost $4.2 billion last year. The rate of losses was reduced during the last quarter to $244.7 million, compared to $317.8 million in spring, but satisfaction is too far to be reached. The company is under $1.3 billion in cash, although it received outside funding of $678.8 million. Sony Ericsson estimates that its market share in units was about 5% in the third quarter.

Sony Ericsson’s officials are however optimistic and outline that some of the company’s problems, such as excessive inventory of handsets, even if apparently chronic, tend to be solved in the near future. The lack of modern smartphones is perhaps a major problem for the company and may have cost migration of customers towards media friendly phones and platforms like iPhone or BlackBerry.

Fall is very important for Sony Ericsson and may mark the return to high-class devices. The XPERIA X1 experience was not satisfactory enough and the firm decided to launch the Satio smartphone and the Windows Mobile-powered XPERIA X2. Touchscreens were provided for the company’s regular phones and the first Android phone from Sony Ericsson, the XPERIA X3, is prepared to be launched for the beginning of next year.

Sony Ericsson presumes that the global phone market for 2009 will contract approximately 10% from almost 1,190 million units last year.

  1. I think that’s indeed the only conclusion can make: “Sony Ericsson ’s lineup misses a real smartphone” Even thoug the X1 should have been able to regain some of the marketshare losses! By the way the X3 will be renamed into X10 and that’s phone which probably will be able to put Sony Ericsson back in the position where they should / want to be.
