Snow Leopard Wins over Windows 7!

Mac OS X Snow Leopard and Windows 7 were put face to face to determine which one is the fastest, important feature for choosing one of them. Tests were performed by CNET, running benchmarks on a 2.53GHz MacBook Pro and each operating system was given its own, separate, clean hard drive. The 64-bit version of each OS was included in the test, which measured a wide range of speed and performance related tasks. The same software was installed for each operating system: iTunes 9, QuickTime, Call of Duty 4 – Modern Warfare, and Cinebench R10.

The tests showed the incontestable supremacy of Snow Leopard when it comes to multitasking with media applications – 38.5 percent faster than Microsoft’s platform – and more responsive, using less time to start up and shut down. Audio encoding with iTunes was also faster on Snow Leopard, as it was expected to be for an Apple native program.

However, Windows 7 is clearly over Snow Leopard in rendering graphics. Macbook Pro’s 512MB Nvidia GeForce 9600M GT graphics chip seems to be more powerful under Windows 7 as Cinebench R10 benchmarks results show. Mac OS X is much slower in professional modelling or gaming tests. Performance-wise, Windows 7 is probably the best choice when you are a gamer (because of more games developed for Windows), even on Mac hardware.

Battery life is another sensitive topic and Snow Leopard has won again, with 111 minutes versus 77 in Windows.

Combining the results is leading to the conclusion of buying an Apple and to benefit from the speed and the increased battery life, but keeping Windows 7 as an option for certain applications.

Not sure what running Windows on hardware that is optimized for OS X proves? This test is useless.

  2. I'M A PC :( says:

Well it proves a lot since Windows itself runs faster on a Mac then a PC. Compare the same type of “Windows optimized hardware” to the same type of “Mac OS optimized hardware” and what you get when trying Windows on both, Windows is faster on a Mac then on the “Windows optimized hardware” and Mac OS X is even faster on that hardware. So what does this prove. Mac OS X is indeed faster and Windows is slower on both “Windows Optimized hardware” and a bit faster on the Mac but not faster then a Mac OS X on a mac. Sorry to burst your bubble.

It proves nothing since Mac OS will only run on Mac optimized hardware, whereas Windows will run on just about any kind of hardware, and I’m sorry, but there is NO version of Snow Leopard that can compete performance wise to Windows 7 running on the hardware that is available out there – Because Snow Leopard cannot run on the awesome hardware that is available for non-mac OS’s. If you really want ultimate performance, you will never find it on a Mac, it’s just the truth. You ‘might’ find tests like this that show that the Mac OS outperforms Windows on certain hardware, but when it comes to the best possible performance, Mac’s are severly handicapped and probably always will be. If you want a toy, buy a Mac, if you really want to do the most you can, buy something else that can use the best there is in hardware.

The benchmark is a scam. They are running Apple software (quicktime and itunes) that is optomized for mac. But when you run non-apple software, Windows 7 blows away the mac. This is another dirty lie from apple… typical of apple to do this too.

Not only are the tests done on a mac, but they use Quicktime and iTunes, Apple-made software that is notoriously good on Mac’s but bloated garbage on Windows.
