Epson has recently began to produce a small 0.47 inches size (in diagonal), high-temperature polysilicon (HTPS) LCD panel, with a very dense 800×600 resolution (1.44 megapixel), meant to be used in some digital cameras viewfinders (EVF). The new product competes with others that display RGB colors in sequence and doesn’t break-up colors. This can be observed as iridescence in the outlines of the fast moving objects, phenomenon affecting, for example, Panasonic’s digital camera Lumix G1 that has its own electronic viewfinder. The new Epson LCD panel shows simultaneously all 16.77 million RGB colors using a color filter.

Epson’s new panel uses an analogue driver to recreate smooth gradations and natural softness. It will allow camera manufacturers to eliminate mirrors and pentaprisms needed for optical viewfinders, so that much smaller and thinner cameras can be created and users capture the image as they see it.

Epson’s new EVF screen is planned to be produced in the near future. A 2.07-megapixel, full HD model is also planned to be released soon as Panasonic, Olympus and other camera manufacturers are requesting.
