After successful meetings with Google, Verizon concluded to have three Android phones by early 2010, two of these handsets being branded with famous names and a third one manufactured by a small firm and having the ability of acting as a router. This third phone will be the first Android handset certified through the Open Development Program of Verizon, program supposed to make easier for a phone to enter the Verizon’s CDMA network. The Open Development Program allows developers to design devices and applications for use on the Verizon Wireless network.

Vendors must meet the E911 emergency standard, have support for SMS and be able to activate the device over-the-air to be eligible for the Open Development Program. The third Android phone has to offer Mi-Fi support, that is to act as a personal router. Verizon’s Mi-Fi technology allows up to five devices to have access to the Verizon’s EV-DO network and has antennas for both CDMA and Wi-Fi. The owners of Mi-Fi handsets will practically have a virtual server with them wherever they go, very convenient situation for Verizon as customers get a fast 3G network from just about anywhere, but they are still paying the carrier for the use of the Verizon network.

The third Verizon phone will be available in early 2010 and the first two handsets will be ready for launch in just a few weeks from now. Motorola Droid, also named Sholes or Tao seems to be one of them The other one’s identity is not yet known. Recent unconfirmed news says that Verizon could offer the Android powered HTC Hero in November.
