On October 13, 2009, Hitachi released two new 15,000 RPM hard drives, which would be the fastest available on the market. Both are part of the Ultrastar series, which includes the first 2.5-inch drive with extra speed in the company’s history, the C15K147 and the 3.5-inch drive of 600GB, the 15K600, which has come to the fourth generation. All of them benefit from a 6Gbps SCSI (SAS) interface, except for the 15K600, which has a 4Gbps Fibre Channel Arbitrated Loop (FCAL) interface too. The 15K600 has one third more the capacity of the model before it and it is said to be 23 percent faster.
The Ultrastar 15K600 is available with 300GB and 450GB. There is also available a 2-TB Western Digital hard drive. It is known as Caviar Black and it is said to have the highest cache buffer nowadays: 64MB.
The second drive is smaller than the 3.5-inch drives and allows simple integration into servers: the Ultrastar C15K147. It replaces the 10,000 RPM drive, but is 11 percent higher in sequential performance and has 1 23 percent faster seek time. It is 50 percent more efficient than Hitachi’s 3.5-inch drives and is available with 73GB or 147GB. The C15K147 has the same 64-MB cache buffer as the 15K600.
Even if Hitachi has already announced the release of these two Ultrastar drives, there are no clues about their prices.
