According to Business Week, Verizon Wireless CEO Lowell McAdam said “We’re planning on using Android… Android is an enabler of what we do.”
It seems it’s about a new device, yet unnamed, that will join more than 30 wireless devices sold by independent vendors that can run on Verizon’s CDMA network. Verizon’s Android-based phones Desire and Droid, aren’t part of that program and are locked to Verizon’s network.
To be eligible for the certification, phone vendors must meet certain standards, which include phone location capabilities compatible with the E911 emergency standard, over-the-air activation capabilities and SMS text messaging support.
No specifications on the third Android device are known, but it is reportedly built by a small, specialist handset maker and will double as personal Wi-Fi router much like Novatel’s MiFi.
