Amazon Kindle is a software and hardware platform developed by Amazon.com for reading e-books and other digital media. Three hardware devices, “Kindle”, “Kindle 2,” and “Kindle DX” support this platform, as well as an iPhone application called “Kindle for iPhone”. The first device was released in the United States on November 19, 2007.
Its reliance on the CDMA-based “WhisperNet” connection made wireless capabilities basically useless outside the United States. Everything will change now with the US & international Wireless edition.
This new Kindle will rely on the AT&T network inside the United States and it will roam on a GSM network outside US.
Starting October 19, this new version of Kindle US & International Wireless will be available for sale for $279, while the regular Kindle 2 US Wireless is only $259.
According to Amazon, the International edition of Kindle will be accessible in 100 countries and territories around the world. However, there is an extra cost of $1.99 for each downloaded book while traveling outside the United States.
