Although at this moment Android is outranked by just about every other OS, Gartner Inc. released a forecast that predicts the Android OS will be the #2 smartphone OS in the world by 2012, holding 14% of the market. Considering their report, we may assume that by the year of 2012 Symbian, BlackBerry OS, and Windows Mobile might loose their power on the market. In fact, Gartner illustrates that Symbian will drop to 39% by 2012..
The predicted success of the Android smartphones is based on the Google’s support and the wide range of apps and cloud computing functions they offer. By 2012, Gartner states that there will be Android sales to top 76 million by 2012. Compared to the 71.5 million by Apple, they assume that the Android OS will beat out the iPhone also.
However, Android is still very new and the next few months are definitory for the popularity this OS might gain by 2012 and for the Gartner’s prediction’s validity.
