Google Earth has now some impressive new features. Thanks to researchers from Georgia Tech, methods have been devised to take real-time, real-world information. The previously barren Googlescape will become as lively and accurate as an ordinary view from your balcony.

In order to do this hey use live video feeds (sometimes from many angles) to find the position and movement of various objects, which they then combine with behavioral simulations to produce real-time animations for Google Earth or Microsoft Virtual Earth. Also, they use motion capture data to help their animated humans move realistically, and are able to extrapolate cars’ motion throughout an entire stretch of road.

The next step is adding weather, birds and motion in rivers.
