Record Summer Sales for RIM

RIM’ results touched new peaks for the summer quarter of this year. The company claimed to have shipped about 8.3 million BlackBerries between June and August, taking down its previous record of 7.8 million. Considering that somewhere around half of those figures represent new BlackBerry accounts, there are now around 32 million BlackBerry accounts active. Even though its net income dropped 26 percents in comparison to the spring from $643 million to $475.6, the company’s income is steadily gaining 3 percent to $3.53 billion. Even more satisfying results are expected in the quarter fall ending in November, with hopes of gains between 4 and 4.3 million new BlackBerries customers. The total amount of smartphones shipped has not been predicted yet but the figures waver between 3.6 billion and 3.85 billion.

The success was half attributed to the debut of the BlackBerry Tour and Curve 8520 as well as multiple promos at Verizon, including free second BlackBerry and discounts. The future Bold 9700 and Storm’s sequel, both expected in the fall, though not yet official, could spice sales up even more.
The results may even aid RIM in topping Apple in smartphone sales. Although their quarters don’t overlap and can sometimes include seasonal factors the others exclude, Apple’s spring quarter followed in RIM’s trail with 5.2 million iPhones shipping during the period. Such performance may change as Apple could only sell the iPhone 3GS for less than two weeks of that quarter and saw shortages in some countries for at least a month afterwards.
