The new to be launched Core i7 which represents four-core parts for laptops is codenamed Clarksfield. According to tests which were published today, Clarksfield seems to be faster per clock cycle than the custom Core 2 Quad substitutes that have conquered the market. Thus, PCPro rankings position the Core i7-820QM which is a mid-range chip clocked at 1.73GHz, somewhere on the same or even at a superior level compared to the 2.53GHz Core 2 Extreme.

The latter`s purchasing price is very high compared to the expected acquisition cost of the Core i7-820QM chip. This represents a competitive advantage for the innovative chip, in spite of the fact that the tests undergone by its system scored lower than did its competitive substitute Dell M6400 Covet. These handicaps are the results of the slower-spinning hard drive of 5,400 rotations per minute, its 4 gigabytes of RAM which represent half of Dell`s same ability and a more mass-production GeForce GT 240M graphics card rather than the Quadro FX 3700M incorporated by the Dell M6400 Covet.

Nonetheless, Core i7 includes a 1.73GHz processor which is more effective than the 2GHz Core 2 Quad in terms of speed and power consumed when it is used. The new gadget is tall and it seems that it will be used in less thinner and lighter laptops. However, at 74 W it can be incorporated with success in notebooks smaller compared to the 17-inch Dell product.

Thanks to Turbo Boost which is a specific found in all Core i3, Core i5 and Core i7 elements, the new device is very fast. Moreover, this endowment enhances the performance of several tasks by automatically shutting down the cores that are not used at a specific moment, thus increasing the speed clock for the cores that still function. Core i7-820QM reaches speeds of up to 3.06GHz thanks to its Turbo Boost. Another means of providing support for two applications on every core is the hyperthreading feature that enables the device to support up to eight tasks at a time on a quad-core chip.

The versions of Core i7 that Intel could launch beginning with next week are the 1.6GHz and 2GHz variants. However, the dual-core version entitled Arrandale which is slimmer and comes at a lower purchasing price is rumored to be available either at the end of this year or beginning with 2010.
