On Thursday, Nokia Siemens announced that the organization had made the first call on a 4G LTE network. Even though this new technology had been already tested in the past, this voice call demonstration was done using a commercial base station and at the same time using a software which was in tune with the standards. By making use of Nokia Siemens` Flexi Multiradio Base Station the incoming call had as receiver the organization`s research and development department from Ulm, Germany. If there is someone who wonders, the LTE platform is supported by a modem Nokia has recently released. The modem is entitled RD-3 and as the organization puts it, it seems to achieve the maximum speeds of 100 megabytes per second. Moreover, the newly introduced modem supports networks such as HSPA and EDGE.
The services of the communication standard Long Term Evolution (LTE) are awaited to be available in specific markets by the end of 2009. Moreover, deployments on a larger scale are sure to begin after the beginning of 2010. Verizon states that these network services will be available in 2010, whereas other carriers for mobile phones like AT&T, for example, claim that the 4G Long Term Evolution networks will be launched starting with 2011.
