New Symbian Smartphone Platform Offers Massive Change

It looks like Symbian S60 v3 is living its last days (and even its successor, Symbian v5), as the Symbian Foundation is considering a complete redesign of the operating system codename Symbian^4 (a number they have previously skipped). Qt will replace the Avkon UI engine and this leads to app incompatibility – older Symbian apps will no longer work on the new platform.

No other details have been made public; the sure thing is that Symbian will be altered from ground up into a pretty new OS, like Pre’s webOS or the iPhone OS. But this is not going to happen until next year
