Apple is supposed to plan a quick upgrade for its Apple TV. A recent investigation of iOS 5 revealed a reference to a certain “AppleTV3,1” profile, a mode previously unknown, but meant to be a complete third-generation model. The 9to5 source did not provide more details.

It is not clear what the new model could bring, but it is expected to be a performance upgrade and would be equipped with an A5 processor. It will be the first 1,080-pixel mobile chip and would probably be better-suited to extras like improved surround sound and others. To accommodate bigger videos, a larger cache might be necessary.

Like in other cases related to Apple code references, the AppleTV3,1 reference does not necessarily mean that a new model would appear. The Apple TV is still unchanged and the company is known to insert prototypes into code occasionally, but they never reached production. There are reasons for Apple to keep a new model in development since competitors like Roku, which make 1,080p a usual feature at Apple’s prices or even below them.
