Navteq has recently announced that the company has expanded its range of mapping services in order to include indoor areas. New maps, initially focusing on hopping centers, include interior map elements like stairs, escalators, bathrooms and emergency exits, along with greater detail for POIs associated information (for example, departments within stores).
Navteq also suggests that Destination Maps are designed for complex navigation within buildings; for example, routing calculations through interior spaces should consider floor levels and several other factors. This system offers as well a virtual connections feature, which is said to improve intuitive control by sending pedestrians directly across open areas which are usually used for foot traffic.
At present, Destination Maps are available for 200 of the most important shopping centers in the USA. Navteq currently plans to add extra domestic sites and locations throughout Europe, Asia Pacific and North America. Existing locations are expected to get better with location-based content (for example, movies) and event schedule for individual venues.
