YouTube, owned by Google, is said to be in talks with the NHL and NBA to stream live games. Google’s plan follows a successful trial of live transmissions of cricket matches or other special events like Arcade Fire at Madison Square Garden. The search giant is currently screening about three billion advertisements in YouTube videos every week driving the company’s ad supported revenue model, which has permitted giving away the cloud-based services as well as operating systems like Android. All of them are supposed to drive users by clicking on its ads.
During the trial of the Indian Premier League live cricket coverage, users spent 40 minutes on average watching each game. This is significantly more than the 15 minutes on average users spent viewing videos on YouTube in other occasions. Google believes that it will drive even more revenue by offering more free live sports programming.
Gautam Anand, director of content partnerships for Asia at Google showed that the contract of YouTube with the Indian Premier League also offered Google a part of ad revenue from TV broadcasts and the official website of the Premier League. Anand added that there will be even more sports content on YouTube to entice viewers. According to Google’s official, negotiations will include more other parties.
