It seems Microsoft has settled on Windows Home Server 2011 as the name of the operating system identified by the code-name “Vail”. According to some recent reports, the software has the beta development phase almost ready. The design team has slipped a Twitter post which suggests that the final release candidate would soon be available on Connect.
Microsoft was largely criticized for a late change that would remove Drive Extender, which is a feature meant to allow users to access several drives as a single volume. Some reports say that Hewlett Packard has dropped any of its plans to use this platform for its MediaSmart home servers because the hardware maker intends to switch to webOS as the future OS for its devices.
Windows Home Server 2011 is expected to ship in the next few months, but the company is supposed to commit to a date for its launch.
