Renesas, the Japanese producer of camera chips which merged with NEC, has announced that it would soon make a sensor that would allow the production of 16-megapixel cameras. The new sensor, CE150, will provide significant improvement over current cameras in smartphones, for instance the 13-megapixel cameras from Japanese producers or the 12.1-megapixel camera in the Nokia N8. The new chipset will enable continuous shooting that will be five times faster than camera phones currently available on the market.

The sensor produced by Renesas will allow cameras to have 1,080-pixel shooting and playback, as the company’s chips are already able to do now. It is not known yet which phone manufacturers will opt to use the new chip from Renesas. The mass production of the CE150 will begin in March. Sample chips are already shipping now at a price of $48.
