Apple recently confirmed its earlier predictions that it would ship one million Apple TVs. A company’s spokesperson confirmed the media hub exceeded the milestone a few days ago. Exact numbers have not yet been confirmed by the tip at AllThingsD.
With about 333,000 devices per month, the growth is much behind other iOS-based devices from Apple, but is an acceptable pace for dedicated TV media devices. For example, Roku has met the goal at the same time, but after two years of sales. Microsoft, Sony and other console makers sell even more units during a single month, which are frequently used for video in spite of their gaming destination.
The surge is mostly credited to a significant drop of the price to $99, but also to customers being attracted by built-in Netflix support as well as a promise of network sharing features like AirPlay.
