A TechRadar source revealed that Windows 8 could have a stronger focus on games. Microsoft’s new operating system would not only make gaming important, but even its key component.

Periodic attempts have been made by Microsoft to improve gaming experience in Windows. They started with DirectX under Windows 95 and included some recent additions like a gaming section in Vista and Windows 7. Microsoft does not have a simplified gaming application store and continues to treat the Windows Live component of gaming as being optional. An important part of the PC gaming market is currently controlled by the Steam platform of Valve Software, which handles direct-download sales and also furnishes matchmaking and most of the responsibilities not built into Windows.

Although the rumor is not yet confirmed, it may reflect Microsoft’s concern that concentrating on the Xbox 360 for five full years has left Windows gaming declining and helped Apple to take control. Microsoft has favored user to switch to Mac computers by reducing the need for Windows PCs for gaming. Since Valve launched Steam for Mac systems, Mac users were allowed to play the same games as on Windows systems, even without needing to buy extra copies in many cases.

Microsoft’s chief Steve Ballmer characterized Windows 8 as being a big gamble and is poised to represent a big break, which includes plans for tablet optimizations, much faster response times and integrated camera support. A fully 3D rendered interface is also possible. The new version of Windows is not expected to ship before late 2012.
