Android’s creator Andy Rubin gave the definition of “open” as a response to Steve Jobs’s comments related to the openness of the platform. At the fourth quarter results meeting, Apple’s CEO made a remark about Google’s claimed openness as being disingenuous. In response to this remark, Rubin posted a snippet of Android on Twitter.
The source repository for Android’s platform is referenced as “git”. This is a distributed revision control system accessible to any coders who would wish to contribute to the Android platform development or would want to access its code. Jobs opinion is that Android is fragmented, due to several manufacturers who added their own code layer to the platform. This has resulted in a somehow “closed” platform, which has induced confusion among consumers, as vendor says.
Google has to formally respond to the comments of Steve Jobs, but the whole story may be interpreted as Apple CEO having touched a sensitive spot in Google’s camp.
