Brandon Watson, Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 chief, has recently confirmed in the latest episode of Windows Weekly podcast that tethering will be supported by the company’s new mobile platform at launch. Enabling this functionality will, however, be at each carrier’s discretion; they will decide whether the feature is activated at all, free or even for a charge. Both Android and iPhone are usually at the discretion of the carrier too.

Tethering offers users the possibility to connect a cellphone to a notebook; this is usually made through Bluetooth or USB, in order to use the integrated 3G or 4G access as an Internet connection. Carriers seem to be hesitant to enable this feature for free, except in countries such as Canada; the hesitation comes from the fact that tethering can spike data use and also adds a layer of support.
