Android-based Facebook phone still in works

While trying to debunk rumors relating to a self-made phone, Facebook claimed to still have this project in work but said to have picked the operating system. It seems the phone would use Android and would focus on making the whole platform more suitable for social networking. Speculations are that Erick Tseng, Android Senior Product Manager has decided to leave Google for Android just to head up this phone project.

Until now, Facebook has insisted that it only hopes to cooperate with others for already existing platforms and also work on the mobile web. Many people see these statements only as a non-denial of the fact that the company is not working directly on the phone and not that it has asked another company to build a phone based on a Facebook platform. Some sources have asserted that Facebook has tried to get input from hardware makers and carriers on a device that would possibly be exclusive for one carrier in the United States.

An eventual decision of the company to use Android for this phone would make possible to use third-party applications and this way shorten the development time for Facebook. The firm based in Palo Alto may take this opportunity as a way of taking advantage over Google and Apple in what concerns mobile social networking. The deal might however be antagonistic towards Google, as the company has confirmed to be already moving towards a social networking component at least, or maybe a full network, during the coming months.

  1. Whatever it is they are working on, I personally think Facebook may want to settle a deal with other smartphone and android phone creators in order to keep their application as part of their phones. Because I can guarantee that even if they come out with a new phone, not every cell phone company will carry it and not everyone will be willing to buy JUST to have better social networking capabilities in a cell phone.
