During a call discussing the latest results of the company, Research in Motion tried to downplay rumors related to threats to its business. It said that the launch of the Torch was the most successful one in RIM’s GSM phone history, as it created an important increase of the company’s sales. It also claimed that companies had speeded up the necessary validation processes in order to get BlackBerry 6 phones, such as the Torch, sooner.

RIM also gave more details about its expectations for the BlackBerry Torch through this fall. The company hopes to ship between 13.8 million and 14.4 million BlackBerries, representing a major increase over this summer’s 12.2 million devices. It also expects 75 more carriers to adopt the Torch by this fall.

After sharing its plans for the future, as expected, RIM tried to cast doubt on the allegedly increasing number of firms adopting iPhone and Android use, as well as other switching to competing platforms. The smartphone producer said it was essential to “question and challenge” such pilot projects and also whether they would really have an effect. Many of them have been implementing test and permanent programs letting their employees use their own phones instead of mandatory BlackBerry devices of their companies. In many cases this led to a meaning number of persons using rival phones instead.

RIM also attempted to justify the decision to use two-year-old displays and processors for the Torch in spite of much higher screen quality and performance from rival firms. The company stated that there were potential risks from trying to go too high-end. Beside the price, phones would prove to be too consumptive of data and would not scale properly. Data compression has been considered by Research in Motion a key advantage because of avoiding congestion that has touched the 3G network post-iPhone at AT&T.

The Canadian smartphone maker said that its speciality has been to resolve a paradox of balance.

Finally, the company gave some hints about exciting news that were to come about BlackBerry DevCon related to WebKit-based widgets.
