Consumer Reports has severely criticized Apple for its decision to finish the iPhone case program at this month’s end. It referred to a less consumer friendly procedure in case customers wanted to contact AppleCare, as they would have to do more work in order to address problems related to signal drop and their choices would be limited to Apple’s Bumper case. The publication said it still would not recommend customers to buy an iPhone 4 as the main cause of the signal problem is still not solved. An external antenna which is not insulated accidentally bridges antennas and suppresses reception.

According to Consumer Reports, transferring the burden on consumers to remedy a design issue is not at all acceptable. Therefore the publication does not recommend the iPhone 4 and asks Apple to permanently fix for the reception problems of the phone.

The magazine said that not every user would face this type of malfunction and that the problem could be solved by the bumper, but criticized Apple for not providing enough data to illustrate the low dropped call rate. During an emergency event dedicated to discussing the drops, Apple and the CEO Steve Jobs have insisted that only one person per a hundred was susceptible to loose calls. Jobs also quoted a significantly low return rate corroborated with ongoing strong demand.

No matter of interest, the image of Apple has been hurt and now customers consider the antenna as being a significant factor, even though second to the presence of an iPhone on Verizon’s network. This incident has provided a major opportunity to Apple’s competitors, such as Samsung and Motorola to attack the company and claim that their phones are immune to the antenna problems the iPhone has.
