Lately, Apple has hit a new milestone very quickly by reaching one million Ping users within only 48 hours after going online. The score is a third of the three million users having downloaded iTunes 10. eddy Cue, vice president of Internet Services, expected even a much higher number, as there were even more people to had downloaded iTunes.

This is a very fast adoption for a new social network and is mostly supported by the existing user base of Apple. There are over 160 million owners of iTunes who use credit cards and are guaranteed an attachment to an Apple ID. Ping will require insignificant effort to get an important portion of these users online. Customers are not always attached to a computer because they can also use an iPod or iPhone to check Ping.

However, Apple is probably not able to compete with the largest pure social network. With 500 million users, Facebook is strongly in the lead. MySpace had about 66 million users in June. It may have been affected in its music efforts as Apple may create a social environment for music, even if lacking any other component. Apple has stressed that Ping’s primary goal was music discovery and under no circumstances direct competition. However, it may already have shadowed the similar Zune Social.
