According to a leak, Research in Motion may have acquired DataViz in order to improve productivity applications on mobile devices. Sources from CrackBerry reveal that the producer of the BlackBerry has paid $50 million for DataViz. Although Research in Motion has not made public the move, the LinkedIn profiles of many DataViz staff members show now job switches to the Canada-based company.

Repercussions on the mobile space have probably appeared, as DataViz has dropped its plans for a Documents To Go version for webOS. There are no indications for shedding other versions, but Research in Motion is known to have a strong incentive to kill versions for any competing platform, such as iOS, Android and Maemo. The port of Documents To Go on the iPhone has been considered a possible threat to RIM’s BlackBerry since it has cut down the incentive to obtain a handset of RIM for work.

Research in Motion has had a strong connection with DataViz as the host of one of the first editions of Documents To Go. It regularly bundles an Office document editing suite light version with its smartphones. A DataViz formal acquisition could mean either a full version given away on all BlackBerry devices or distributed in return for bulk deals like the set up of a BlackBerry Enterprise Server.
