Samsung has recently specified that the price of its Galaxy Tab attached to an US carrier should be below Apple’s iPad. The full price of the device may be more expensive, $900 or even more. Executive Hankil Yoon said that this price would be limited to $300, but very likely above $200. Discussions with United States carriers are in progress, but Hankil Yoon did not specify any name, only that the price would vary.
Germany was scheduled to be the first to receive the Galaxy Tab, in the middle of September. The next wave should include Italy. Many of the European branches of Vodafone would get the device in October. A Verizon model is also expected to come, as well as a Sprint model with 4G in November.
Emphasizing on carrier discounts seems to be a calculated strategy for Samsung, but also risky. The company would lower the cost of the tablet to half of the price of a 3G iPad, which is $629, but the discount would require a contract which would lock the users into an interval of two years of data, no matter if they need it or not. A Verizon plan with 250MB per month should cost $40, which means $960 over two years. On the contrary, iPad users have to pay more initially but have to use service only for a month at a time. They would pay as little as $15 for the service.
The Korean company is considering as an advantage the more portable form as well as the front and back cameras. The iPad’s features are not so spectacular, but the device was launched many months earlier and is better fitted for the web and video, as it has a larger screen.
