In the opening of the IFA technology show, Philips upgraded its Cinema 21:9 line to 3D. The 3D Cinema 21:9 Platinum now doubles the LCD panel refresh to 400Hz in order to support the added depth with stereoscopic glasses. At 58 inches, it is slightly larger than the original one and will be unique in providing 3D at the same aspect ration as most of the theaters. The design still outputs at 2560×1080, having the unique option of using Net TV browsing side-by-side with a picture when watching TV or other materials at a narrower aspect ratio. Thanks to Philips’ experience in lighting, the TV set can use its own Ambilight background lighting to ease the strain of looking at the set in the dark or change colors to match the few movies which support the technology.
The 3D Cinema 21:9 Platinum will have a premium price of 4,000 euros ($5,133) in Europe and will start shipping to at least the UK starting the end of September. Even if Philips does ship TVs to the USA, the company hasn’t brought the 21:9 displays to the country until now.
