On August 31, 2010, Staples declared that it would be the second US retailer to sell the third-generation of Kindle. The office store will bring the six-inch Wi-Fi and 3G variants of the Kindle, but also the Kindle DX. The company plans to stock the hardware too and offer users a chance to try the e-readers in store.
Smaller Kindles are expected to be out for try in the fall, being available with several accessories. Kindle DX readers will start shipping later, most probably in the end of this fall. All of theses will be available under the $139, $189 and $379 price tags that Amazon usually charges itself.
With Staple, Amazon gets its second major retail presence. Until recently, Amazon could only sell in Target stores, having quite limited exposure. For example, Apple has one of the largest advantages – its iPad can be sold in the company’s own stores, but also by Apple resellers and Best Buy; Barnes&Noble benefits from the luxury of having its own stores too.
The Kindle is currently considered the leading e-reader in the USA, even though the inability to try one first-hand is still considered one of its major setbacks.
