Samsung’s Galaxy Tab may only get 100K units per month

According to part suppliers, despite the fact that Samsung’s Galaxy Tab has been setup as an iPad rival, the maker may have modest ambitions for the tablet. They have estimated for DigiTimes that the initial production for Samsung’s Android tablet sits at 100,000 units per month, which means less than a tenth of Apple’s sales rate. More than 3.27 million iPads were sold during this spring and will most probably increase as international reach and holiday demand picks up.

Even if Samsung would have modest expectations, the company is thought to be worried about the iPad’s effect on netbooks and it may focus more on tablet development as a way of saving falling netbook sales in Europe. ASUS, for example, seems to be currently facing a similar effect; the company has lowered Eee PC production, probably as a direct reaction.

Unofficially, suppliers believed that Samsung’s Galaxy Tab was more likely a defensive strike against a seven-inch Apple iPad, not a direct attempt to oppose the original 10-inch. The Samsung Galaxy Tab uses a seven-inch display from the start and may be comparable to a Wi-Fi iPad in price, even with dual cameras and 3G.
