The Android Market seems to be continuing on a trend towards free applications, while the opposite scenario holds true on Apple’s iOS App Store. According to the latest numbers gathered by 148Apps.biz and AndroLib, the Android portal appears to be dominated by free titles, which means almost 64 percent of all their content. On the other hand, 70 percent of the App Store titles require users to pay a fee.
The exact reasons for this discrepancy still remain unclear, but Pingdom suggests that developers may currently be testing the waters with the Android Market. Google’s platform seems to attract more hobbyists and open-source developers; both categories are more likely to distribute free applications rather than paid ones. Another possibility may be the division between categories; iOS devices are currently more popular for gaming purposes.
Earlier this year, another separate report pointed to a similar spread: 57 percent of the Android applications were at that time free of charge. At that time, Apple’s App Store was said to have between 73 and 80 percent paid titles, which also had higher prices that the Android Market.
