Making serious efforts to close the incident and avoid a ban imposed by the Indian government, RIM has offered to initiate an industry forum, meant to solve the Indian security concerns currently associated with BlackBerry phones. Research in Motion has a deadline until August 31st to resolve this problem and is now making an offer to the government. It is focused on permitting legal access to data but still insists to safeguard what it calls “legitimate information security needs” both for companies and other groups that are operating in India.
The forum’s goal, in RIM’s conception, is working closely with the Indian government to develop recommendations for processes and policies intended to prevent any misuse of strong encryption technologies but preserve social benefits in the area.
Officials of the Indian government have sent a notice to local mobile operators and have ordered them to ensure that security agencies can monitor BlackBerry messages or, otherwise, cut the services. GK Pillai, Indian Home Secretary, has to make a final decision related to the ban a day before the deadline. It is not known yet if the security agency has accepted Research in Motion’s offer.
