John Chambers, CEO of Cisco Systems, said in an interview that in his opinion holographic TV sets would be the next big technological step in the industry. As revealed by a CNET report, Chambers thinks that ten years would be enough for the new technology to arrive. It would enhance further the viewing experience and would make medicine applications easier to view in three dimensions and from any angle.

CIS Shaygan Kheradpir, at Verizon, shared the same opinion, adding that his company was already working to bring such holographic technologies into small businesses and into homes. No details were revealed, excepting that an attempt would be made to send a holographic image of a person’s head across Verizon’s FiOS fiber-optic network. For instance, by using this technology, doctors would be able to make a patient’s diagnosis from the comfort of their own home.

Shaygan Kheradpir also said that a fast connection, like Verizon’s 1Gbps FiOS fiber-optic line evolution, would be needed to deliver such holographic video content. He also added that holography would be the kind of technology required to increase the demand for services with such high speeds. But without the infrastructure, the implementation cost for holographic technology would be too expensive.

He pointed to the FiOS tier of his company, which already had a 50Mbps service available, but with no demand for an eventual 100Mbps tier that it would easily offer.

Holographic technology requires the use of several cameras to record an image and afterwards render it in order to be able to change orientation and position like the real subject. Australia’s Telstra has demonstrated the transmission of holograms, while Cisco itself has also done some holography demonstrations.
