iPad could control tablet market two more years

The iPad is believed to keep its strong position on the tablet market for two more years at least, as iSuppli estimates. Apple’s tablet is supposed to get 74.1 percent of the respective market this year and is predicted to still keep a dominating 61.7 percent of this market by 2012. This dominant position would be kept in spite of new challengers expected to come in 2011 as well as the whole Windows tablet PC market already in play.

These estimations are based both on existing sales of Apple and the historical pattern which has been demonstrated by the iPhone. Although many competitors have reached the market the same year with signature phones included like the Palm Pre and T-Mobile G1, it was only this year that strong competition to Apple has been provided by Motorola’s Droid X to represent a significant threat. The advantage Apple has in tablets is large enough as the Windows tablet market has been too weak. Therefore, Apple had a near-monopoly on the market for the largest part of this year.

Competition to the iPad will be ready this year, including the Galaxy Tab of Samsung and probably the BlackPad of Research in Motion. However, the web OS tablet of Hewlett Packard is due to ship only next year. Rhoda Alexander from iSuppli said that many competitors might still be in trouble, because Apple is advantaged by knowing the size of the screen and the input it can work with. Other manufacturers have to optimize applications themselves because of using different displays and having other expectations.

The most difficult track is to be followed by Android tablets because they so far use an off-the-shelf Google interface and therefore are not supposed to have a too large number of tablet-sized applications. Meantime, Apple may have 25,000 applications or more, including creative applications for music and art, probably not available for Google.
