Apple would not allow its iPhone in UK O2 green rankings

Apple does not agree to let its iPhone be rated in the new environmental ranking system of the United Kingdom carrier O2, according to information from The Guardian. In partnership with Forum for the Future, a sustainability advisory group, the new scheme rates phones taking into consideration the impact certain factors like energy efficiency, manufacturing, packaging and the possibility of recycling have on the environment. Accordingly, each device receives a score going from zero to five. The score is based on a number of 63 questions which are provided to manufacturers.
Major manufacturers, including Nokia, Sony Ericsson and Samsung are already participating in the new rankings. According to carrier information, 93 percent of devices in O2’s network should be covered. The absence of the iPhone in this ranking system is therefore more conspicuous. Another remarkable actor, Research in Motion, promised to join the ranking scheme in 2011.
As for the reasons making the company to turn away from O2’s ranking system, an Apple spokeswoman firmly declined to give any information. The media is instead directed to Apple’s internal environment reports in which the iPhone is promoted as having a minimal footprint. Groups like Greenpeace have strongly criticized this behaviour and have accused the company of lack of transparency.
The top-rated phone on theO2 list is the Elm of Sony Ericsson, which has obtained a score of 4.3. This result is a consequence of the company’s ability to substitute for different devices like an MP3 player, a GPS unit and a camera. Several devices have tied for second position, Nokia C7, Nokia 6700, Nokia 1800, Sony Ericcson’s Xperia X10 mini, mini pro and Zylo, as well as Samsung GT-S8500 being rewarded with a score of 4.
