On August 23, 2010, Google clarified its previous promise to launch Google Googles for the iPhone. David Petrou, Googles head, declared at Stanford University’s Hot Chips conference that the iPhone version will be ready by the end of 2010. There has been no reason given for the postponement of the Android version, which only launched in December and is now incorporated in Android 2.1 and beyond.

The application is being considered as a highlight for Android, because it offers a true visual search based on results from a smartphone’s own camera, recognizing objects and also tuning up links to shopping sites when appropriate. The app is currently considered essential thanks to its ability of scanning the QR codes Android uses for direct shortcuts to applications in Android Market.

Apple’s devices have been technically capable of using Google’s Googles ever since the iPhone 3GS has been added the autofocus feature, which was needed to get a reliable picture. Google’s application could be more precise on the iPhone as tap-to-autofocus should be more accurate than the usual automatic-only Android function. A front-facing camera, which is still rare in Android, would even raise the option of capturing some objects without having to hold them behind the phone.

No matter the platform, Google is still developing an open programming interface in order to support Googles for third-party applications, which could use this as a single-purpose instrument. Future plans of the company could involve augmented reality and have the application identify objects only by pointing the camera, rather than having to take the photo and then wait for a scan of the final picture.
