On August 24, 2010, RIM bought Cellmania in what seems to be a try to improve BlackBerry App World. RIM’s new acquisition mainly produces software at the heart of others’ mobile application stores; Cellmania hasn’t given many details on the new project, but expects to work for BlackBerry phones, on the so-called “Application Storefront development”. Therefore, Cellmania will now on be devoted entirely to RIM for any new project, but plans to continue supporting its existing clients.

The new acquisition may prove vital for reinvigorating RIM’s slowed down ambitions for App World. Even if RIM regularly claims to have a better store with very good applications, it only has about 9,000 titles, while Android may have just passed 100,000 and it is known that Apple’s App Store has passed 225,000 several months ago. Many BlackBerry App World titles are often, however, ports from other platforms.

Cellmania might say that lagging infrastructure and pricing policies have been two of the reasons why there has been so much reluctance in developing for the store. With the App World 2.0, RIM has just added features that are already common in other stores (for example, paying with a credit card or having an account that can bring applications from device to device). Fewer and fewer users buy BlackBerry applications because of the difficulty of paying for and keeping applications; moreover, these thing are much simpler on iPhones and Android devices.
