A job listing recently posted on LinkedIn may give unexpected hints of new hardware and software made by Sony. The post refers to a Senior Staff Software Engineer who would focus on Android and would help the Digital Reading group to create application software addressed to digital reading as well as other types of consumer electronic devices. Although further details were not given, it is believed that an Android-based touchscreen Reader and a stand-alone Android application are in question.

Hints of possible dedicated reader applications as a part of the requirements were also provided. Developers are required experience with Windows as well as Mac OS X development. Phones of Nokia could receive support through development on Qt that could relate to Symbian and Maemo phones.

As the post has been pulled, it seems Sony either succeeded to fill the spot or just wanted to keep the secret on it.

Sony is certainly eager to improve its core e-reader competitiveness. The company was among the first to popularize e-readers. However, it slipped to only five percent in favor of Amazon, Barnes & Noble and even Apple. It is believed that a veritable Android device would provide Sony with a device which would be closer to the sophisticated Nook or the iPad-level tablet. The new software would make it competitive versus its rivals, all of them being able to provide an option of reading on computers, tablets, smartphones or all together.
