MetroPCS, regional no-contract carrier, has unveiled the Samsung R900 as being named the Craft and launching in conjunction with the Long Term Evolution rollout (LTE) that is scheduled later this year. Being the first 4G phone in the United States, the Craft would not be more expensive than a 3G handset and would be priced at $300. LTE will be used only for data traffic, the device still depending on CDMA for voice services.

The operating system is not currently known, but other features include a Qualcomm processor, a touchscreen display, a three-megapixel camera, full HTML browser and Bluetooth 2.1.

Roger Linquist, MetroPCS CEO, during a conference call, said that the LTE network of his company would launch for the first time in Dallas/Fort Worth as well as in Las Vegas. The complete deployment in these areas should arrive early in 2011. This would bring a significant enhancement of the speed for the service, from which about seven million customers included in the network would benefit.

MetroPCS is a small player but it could beat both AT&T and T-Mobile and its 4G service would come almost in time with the launch of Verizon’s 4G in late 2010.
