White iPhone 4 is delayed due to capacity and precision problems

A report released a few days ago may explain the month-long delay of the white iPhone 4 delivery. It seems, according to explanations given by 21st Century Herald, that Lens Technology, the supposed contractor, is having difficulties in getting the right thickness and opacity for the white paint that Apple intends to use for the glass panels. Consequently, Lens’ production is just half the required level, which means only three panels made per hour.

The decision Apple made to postpone the white color iPhone 4 is meant to constitute a large enough reserve of devices made at a reduced rate, so that the supply is normal at least for a short time. This will give Lens Technology sufficient time to improve its speed. The supply problem is unique for Apple, since most phones are made of plastic which is easy to color. The front and back use glass and also have matching colors, while both the iPhone 3G and 3GS only needed a unique plastic shell.

Neither Lens nor Apple has confirmed these explanations.
