HTC responded to Apple’s recent cellphone reception defense and pointed to its phones’ low problem rate. Apple had claimed to have 0.55 percent of reception problems calls to AppleCare. HTC said that its same rate related to the Droid Eris, indicated by Apple as having such problems, was not higher than 0.016 percent. Eric Lin, PR manager at HTC, said that there were only very few problems of this kind with the Android phone which is now discontinued.

The Droid Eris’ design, as well as its sibling device the Hero, is somehow unique as it has its main antenna placed the proximity of the top of the device. In contrast, Apple and other smartphone makers place the antennas to the bottom of their devices in order to reduce the level of the radiation that potentially enters the head of the user and this way lower the specific Absorption Rate (SAR) which can be measured by running tests.

The reaction comes after commentaries from Nokia and Research in Motion which accused Apple of ignoring the design’s practical aspects in favor of better theoretical reception. However, Nokia did emphasize that sensitivity related to human hands represented a problem for the smartphone market in general, not only for Apple. The latter’s challenge consists of making an antenna from the steel frame, as it allows the human hands’ capacitance bridge easily the antennas and this way cut the signal quicker than in the situation of touching a device that has antennas placed on its inside.
